2048 is a single-player sliding-tile puzzle built around a 4×4 grid. Instead of racing against a timer, you arrange numbered tiles and combine matching values to create increasingly larger numbers. The main target is to reach the 2048 tile, although you can continue playing after reaching it.

The rules are easy to learn, but each move changes the entire board. That makes 2048 a good choice for players who enjoy number puzzles, planning, and short strategic challenges.

HOW TO BUILD THE 2048 TILE

A new game starts with two tiles placed randomly on the 4×4 board. Each tile contains either 2 or 4. Use the arrow keys or swipe in one of four directions to move every tile across the grid.

  • Combine matching numbers: When two tiles with the same value meet, they merge into one tile worth twice as much. For example, two 8s become 16.
  • Plan around new tiles: After each move, another 2 or 4 appears in an empty space. Keep enough room available so future combinations remain possible.
  • Protect your larger tiles: Keeping the highest-value tile in a corner can make the board easier to organize. Build smaller values around it instead of moving your biggest tile around unnecessarily.
  • Watch for dead ends: The game ends when the board is full and no adjacent tiles can merge. As larger numbers occupy more spaces, finding useful moves becomes harder.

Why Planning Matters More Than Fast Moves

The key challenge in 2048 is controlling where your tiles end up. A merge that looks useful now can leave an important number trapped in the wrong position. Thinking several moves ahead helps preserve open spaces and creates better opportunities for larger combinations.
